Tomorrow's Success Starts With Steps Today.

What if you woke up with anticipation for all the tasks and activities you have today? I have been thinking on this lately and when I go to sleep thinking about the next day it can go one of two ways. The first, is anxiety filled insomnia leading to inadequate sleep because I worry so much about my tasks and potential performance at work the next day. The second is quick slumber and waking up before my alarm because I am so excited to crush it that day.

Is there a way to consistently wake up feeling like I am going to crush it?

The answer is YES!

There is a routine I try to follow to yield the results I want. Up to this point, every time I do not follow this routine I go to bed anxious and worried. Here it is:

  1. No phone or screens 30 minutes before my bedtime that I set for myself.

  2. Read for those 30 minutes instead of scrolling social media.

  3. Journal until I fill up one page. If you don't know where to start, ask 3 questions: "What am I grateful for?", "What went well today?" "What can I improve tomorrow?"

  4. Turn off all the lights, get comfy and cozy, then practice breathing deeply through my nose and out my mouth until I relax my body.

  5. Wake up energized and ready to start the next day with vigor and excitement.

This is not easy and I am not consistent at this routine. It is not about where we start but the fact that we start and it is not about where you end up as much as it is about where you are going and how you get there. It isn't perfect and that is okay.

The point is that we are on the path.

The main tenants are to not look at a screen 30 minutes before bed because the blue light does effect our ability to sleep deeply. To spend time winding down your mind into a less anxious and more calm state. Lastly, to practice breathing deeply and expanding my lungs before I sleep, which helps me fall asleep faster and wake up more rested. I can absolutely feel the difference when I follow the routine and when I don’t.

The other benefit of this is forming a habit and the capacity for following a disciplined routine. Through this process you prove to your subconscious brain that you can repeatedly perform a task that you did not previously do.

Take some time to educate yourself on how to improve and grow. If we are serious about a goal or commitment, we invest resources into achieving that accomplishment. The resources can look like time, money, sweat, tears, etc...

The encouragement here is that we are capable of growth and development. We should hold that dearly and not squander the opportunity we have to evolve and adapt to increase our ability and capacity.
